Music Residency – SARRO

Melanco-Rythm project – Residency

Sarro’s artistic residency at the LABO Studios of Live Room is part of a global project that the artist has named Melancorythm project.
This research project into the ancient broken memories of slaves will take the artist to different port towns where this trade had once created their wealth.

Sarro begins his journey from the island of Gorée in Senegal, his native country to Morocco, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Brazil, and North America to finally produce an album with the different melanco-rythms he felt and shared with other artists in each of the cities visited…
In this residency, Sarro discovered a part of the history of the slaves who passed through Tangier from where he created a song through its melanco-rythms. Sarro closed his Moroccan journey in Tangier after visiting other cities of slave ports such as Rabat – Salé, and Essaouira.

Live Room Halloween Shows 2022

Live Room Halloween Show 2022

In the same tradition as Christmas Eve and New Years Eve, “All Hallow’s Eve” is the evening before the holiday proper. In the night of october, the 31th, a large part of the planet celebrate what we call now the Halloween eve: The night where all freaky spirits comeback once in a year to life. A decade ago, Halloween was especially celebrated in US and anglosaxone zone, but lately it became very famous because of its comercial aspect and the big atraction it has on children and adults both and because people love to disguise and have fun about freaky things for a night.

Halloween is therefore also invited to LABO studios, first on Friday, October 28 for a kids party in partnership with Lerchundi center for kids where only fun will be on the top of the program list and then on Saturday, October 29 for yet another edition of the Live Room Show event, a most demonic evening dedicated to night owls in search of thrills, dance show and choreography on electronic music and a cyber freaky show ander the theme: Death brings life!

Among the guests are vampires, psychopaths, undead, witches, sadistic cannibals and your pals!! As if that weren’t enough, it will take place in a laboratory, which is none other than the basement of an old hotel, which is said to be haunted. It promises.

So welcome to all kids (with limitation of places availables) Friday 28 october starting from 3:00pm and youngsters +16 years on Saturday 29 october starting from 6:30pm. And because it’s Halloween, we don’t forget that costumes are MANDATORY, and the scariest ones will be rewarded. You know what you have to do now … pray for your life Uhahahahaha!

Rehearsal of the research residency of EVASION.

Évasion is a contemporary creation of live arts co-produced by Live Room and the Institut Français Maroc dealing with the subject of freedom among young people – and especially young girls – and the oppression exerted first by their families and then by society against ideas and behavior deemed “without any future” and “intrusive culture”.

In this creation that we consider to be of a mixed type (contemporary theatre, contemporary dance, urban dance and projection), we have sought the causes of this oppression and censorship, the means by which it is exercised and the possible solutions to deal with it, but also to raise awareness of the enormous shortfall that society loses through its acts of prohibition and oppression against young girls in our country.

The first lines of the project were drawn at the end of 2021 and the project started in January 2022 and took more than two months for the choice of the final team and the artistic vision of the creation. And after a month of closed residence of choreographic and scenographic research, the team presented the result of their work to an audience composed mainly of young artists, actors and dancers. A discussion was held at the end of the show between the Evasion team and the public for the critics and of which they were in their majority very encouraging to go ahead and complete this creation.

See you after the next scenographic and technical residency rehearsal and till that, we leave you with some comments collected in the discussion with the public:

“The piece really touched me, so as if it spoke about myself. The message was clear and very emotional”

“You could feel the stress among the actors and also the physical tiredness, but congratulations for their first actuation”

“Some acts were perfect, others still need work”

“It’s not just a girl’s problem, I too have been through the same thing, but congratulations once again because I really felt the message so much that my eyes rolled with tears in the first act”

“Bravo for the scenography and the coordination between the different elements: Text, dance, projection”

Urban Art Week Fest is back for its 6th edition

Take out your parents’ old clothes, and music cassettes and start hanging old posters on your walls because Retro culture is back in style!

Less Than two weeks until the 6th edition of your favourite and long-awaited festival, Urban Art Week! For this year the theme that we’ve chosen is “Old but Gold”, for we all know that every form of art we enjoy today, is thanks to the art that preceded it. Hence, we felt obliged to bring back the old days and turn them into gold.

This year, beside the Graffiti murals and the indoor exhibition which are the main activities of the Festival, we are having among us pixel art & retro console music with Jalal Yassin. And we will be playing some awesome music for you to jam to and please your ears and body, by Disco Atlas and Noujoum la Gironde. In the program, we have different workshops in painting, dance, comics, graffiti and beatbox.

Urban art wouldn’t be urban if the Graffiti isn’t involved, therefore, for the murals program we will be having with us, over twenty artists from different regions, among them six international artists from France and Spain,  with a very special guest; Collectif Renard. All of these artists will be working hand in hand for one aim; beautifying the walls and the streets of our beloved Tangier.

Gaming lovers, we have not forgotten about you! In addition to all of the incredible activities spoken of, we will also be having gaming tournaments, so get your gaming minds in shape, you will need it!

Did you think we were done? You thought wrong, the full and detailed program is down below, read it and why not memorise it, you wouldn’t want to miss a thing!

Mini Urban Art Week activities

Live Room was called to animate the Youth space of the 24th Edition of “Le Printemps du Livre et des Arts” organized by l’Institut Français of Tangier from the 19th to 21st May at the beautiful Palace of the Italian institutions, dates that coincided with the mini Urban Art Week that we planned to organize this year for our local artists before the big festival in summer.

Our Stand

Live Room was involved by animating the live stage of the space by music performances and dance and by programming Graffiti and Drawing workshops for interested children and youngsters. We also had a presentation Stand in the space where we presented our association and activities and where JAPOREA (Live Room’s manga club) presented their handcrafted items and piece of Art to sell. The Game Room (Live Room’s gaming club) took also advantage of the event and prepared a corner for gaming (consoles, Arcade machine, chess, Cards games, etc.).

Drawing Workshops
Graffiti Workshops

The idea of making a mini–Urban Art Week activities comes from our will to engage local artists into the UAW festival and prepare them to compete with foreign artists but also to test our capacity to manage successfully two big events at the same time in different places. So, while one part of the team was managing the open mic scene or decorating kids’ faces with make-up, the second part of the team was holding a Dance battle in LABO, recording a rap mixtape in our studios or managing the Game of Skate in Sahat Oumam spot.

Finally, the event was great overall and we want to thank everyone who participated in our activities, also want to thank the team’s members for their engagement and efforts. Our special thanks go also to l’Institut Français who give us the chance to organize this. See you in a month in the 6th edition of the Urban Art Week Festival of Tangier!

#NOSKATRAPCHELLENGE – Rap competition of the North.

#NOSKATRAPCHELLENGE – Rap competition of the North.

Live Room ignited the Labo stage on the 12th of February, hosting the finale of the Rap competition #Noskatrapchallenge, which gathered over 100 Rap fanatics in the eliminations phase, bringing together the North’s Rap scene under the theme of “Gender equality” and “Fighting violence against women”.

Rap challenge for women’s rights in Morocco

The first stage of the competition was digital, each rapper who wished to participate was to upload a freestyle of 1 minute under the competition theme. A total of 8 Finalists: Captain Vintag, Nezar, Ayman Achhab, Yassin Sbai, Merry, Atta, Romyo, and I.sam were selected after a rigorous ranking process that involved a committee of well versed judges that consisted of Liveroom’s Music unit, as well as “L3arbé”, and “Bad Flow” who are two Rap icons that have done a lot for the rap movement in the North. The contestant Yassin Sbai however wasn’t able to make it to the finale, and was spontaneously replaced during the event by the charming Kaoutar Amerniss who was among the guests, a real badass who entered the competition with a “bang!”, freestyling her way into the crowd’s heart.

Rap battle of the North of Morocco

The finale consisted of 3 rounds: During the first round the finalists were already given a beat prior to the event, to which they had to rap for 1 minute. 4 Contestants: Nezar, Atta, I.sam, and Merry made it to the second round, where they had to feel the flow and freestyle to a beat they’ve never heard before. Only 2 participants : Merry and Atta made it to the final 1 vs. 1 round, which was the climax and ultimate highlight of the event.
The heated dissing and clashing between the two finalists truly captured the soul of rap, making the entire crowd feel the flow in the heat of the moment, reminding us of one of the most epic rap battle of history from the movie “8 mile”.

The winner of the final round was none other than the Flow Queen Meryem Amor aka. “Merry”, who blew everyone’s mind and lit the stage on fire, exposing the true spirit of the Competition, proving to the world that Urban Culture was never gender specific, and that women are creative, capable, strong, and worthy of respect and acknowledgement.

Big thanks to our engaged public who supported digitally and physically the event. Big UP to the Live Room team who worked hard to achieve the fixed goals. And special thanks to our partners and sponsors for this action: Union de l’Action Féministe de Tanger and AIDA association.

See you soon for brand new challenge!
